Character files can be found in:

• Windows: "My Documents/My Games/Terraria/Players"
• Mac: "~/Library/Application Support/Terraria/Players" (user home)
• Linux: "~/.local/share/Terraria/Players" (or "${"$XDG_DATA_HOME"}/Terraria/Players")

If Steam Cloud Save is enabled, you can download a copy of your save file or temporarily disable it in game properties (accessed through right-click in Library).
